Know the difference between “had” and “have.”

Written by , Posted in health, health and beauty

photo-2CAPES [something empowering] On a bus ride home from school when I was in kindergarten, a boy told me that I had chubby cheeks.  And while there was probably some truth to it then, I’ve treated it as a permanent truth: I have chubby cheeks.  This video, that you’ve probably watched a few times already, has caused me to rethink how I define myself, and understand the difference between “had” and “have.”

COFFEE [latest trend or addiction]  I’ve started eating vegetables for breakfast.  Brussels sprouts, zucchini, broccoli…if it’s green, I’ll eat it pre-noon.  Yum.  Join me.

THE COLOR ORANGE [something noteworthy]  A week ago I did something I’ve never done before: I officiated a wedding.  I know the bride from Junior High, and her and her now husband got married at the top of Whistler Mountain.  A gondola trip up, and up the stairs of the lodge to the outdoor patio – they said their “I do’s” outside in 25 degree weather, overlooking snow-peaked mountains.  It was a privilege, and I’ll never forget it.

good until the last drop

CAPES [something empowering] Sometimes we want to go back to something that we were before. But the past is history. Let go, and focus on your present and future.

COFFEE [latest trend or addiction] Jillian Michaels’ Ripped in 30 workout video is awesome. I’ve done it so many times now that I can put Jillian on mute and get ripped while watching the Today Show or Ellen (which makes it that much more awesome).

THE COLOR ORANGE [something noteworthy] Am I the only one that cuts open my expensive shampoos and conditioners in order to get the last ounce worth? Probably.

"Hi auntie I watched Finding Nemo and peed on the couch."

Written by , Posted in health and beauty, nephew, shopping

CAPES [something empowering] The last time I babysat for my nephew, we watched Finding Nemo and he peed on the couch, but didn’t tell me until I found it later after I had put him to bed. Today when I saw him, he said “Hi auntie I watched Finding Nemo and peed on the couch”. Telling the truth is important. Whether it’s in the moment, or a few days/weeks/years later…it’s important to fess up. Another important lesson I learned from an incredibly amazing and adorable 2-year old.

COFFEE [latest trend or addiction]
Lately, I’ve been really into cake stands and trays. This cake stand is creatively made from a vintage glass and orange plate. Guess who’s headed to the antique store?

THE COLOR ORANGE [something noteworthy] This 2-minute “how to” tutorial for drying bangs definitely beats this dude’s video (plus, do guys really consider themselves as having bangs??).

"sometimes I dream bigger than I live" (macklemore)

Written by , Posted in health and beauty

CAPES [something empowering] It’s not okay to dream bigger than you live…give yourself permission to add some life to your dreams.

COFFEE [latest trend or addiction] I love this new Aveda shampoo and conditioner. Invalti’s catchphrase is “keep the hair you have longer”…and not only does it use ayurvedic herbs to strengthen your hair, but it also exfoliates your scalp to unclog pores and remove product build-up. I’ve used it for 2 weeks, and have totally noticed a difference in my hair.

THE COLOR ORANGE [something noteworthy] I think I’ve watched this sloth video from the Ellen show 6+ times. KB may have beat me to it, but when I turn 31, I’m arranging to have a sea cow at my party. Boom!

brussels sprouts: the ultimate hipster vegetable

Written by , Posted in health and beauty, recipe

CAPES [something empowering] “Therefore, it behooves us to be careful what we worship, for what we are worshipping we are becoming” (Ralph Waldo Emerson).

COFFEE [latest trend or addiction] Need some extra shine? Try dabbing a bit of lip gloss on your cheeks.

THE COLOR ORANGE [something noteworthy] Here’s my sister-in-law’s delicious recipe for brussels sprouts: 1) halve the sprouts, 2) toss them in olive oil, salt, and pepper, 3) place them cut side down in an iron skillet pan* and toast them, 4) after they are nice and toasty, mix them around in the pan. Finish with a sprinkle of parmesan. A once socially-hated vegetable is now hipster-cool.

*I don’t have an iron skillet, so I broil them in the oven.

we are freedom adults, not single adults, thankyouverymuch.

Written by , Posted in health and beauty, lululemon

CAPES [something empowering] Does anyone else hate the term “single adults”? Thanks for defining us by what we are not. I’ve decided to start calling our group “freedom adults”. Join me.*

COFFEE [latest trend or addiction] They aren’t just for your 80’s acrylic sweaters…Lately, I’ve been using my $2 lint buster on anything I can get my hands on! I recently reinstated my favorite Lululemon beanie, restored a few pilly wool sweaters, and brushed up my toggle jacket. Goodbye fuzz!

THE COLOR ORANGE [something noteworthy] I just heard this new tip to avoid razor burn! Simply dust a bit of baby powder on the problem area after you shower for zero burn and zero redness. The powder I use has cocoa butter in it and smells fabulous: Silky Underwear Dusting Powder from Lush.

*While I associate myself with freedom adults, I am in a relationship. Sorry to all my interweb-blogging-hopefuls out there.

"No one can be un-cheered with a balloon." (Winnie the Pooh)

Written by , Posted in health and beauty, movies

CAPES [something empowering] Occasionally, there are no words, and that’s okay. Sometimes life calls for a wordless chorus.

“Relationships can be…”“Sure.”
“…but they’re also be…”
“That’s right.”
(George Clooney to Brad Pitt in Ocean’s 13)

COFFEE [latest trend or addiction] A while back, my good friend came up with the idea to velcro a tube of chapstick to her bed frame. That way, when dry lips came a-knocking in the middle of the night, she was ready. I think I’ll use this idea in other places too – like my car (somehow, I always lose tubes of chapstick in my car).

THE COLOR ORANGE [something noteworthy] For those of you in a long-distance relationship…a Scottish designer has the remedy for your heartache.

CAPES [something empowering] It’s not about what you can’t do, it’s about what you can do. Stop defining yourself by your limitations, switch off your “comparison-mode”, and start celebrating the things that you’re good at.

COFFEE [latest trend or addiction] Even Twistband supports Movember with their Mr. Mustache Collection.

THE COLOR ORANGE [something noteworthy] No-shave-November now has an official name. Happy Movember!

Pass the juice, please.

Written by , Posted in health and beauty

CAPES [something empowering] Reconcile anger, bitterness, and any feelings that turn your insides ugly. But don’t feel the need to reconcile relationships that were unhealthy to begin with.

COFFEE [latest trend or addiction] Earlier this year, I blogged about the joys of henna hair dye. But when this brunette tried to turn herself into a blond-bombshell, she turned green with envy. Henna may be natural, but the levels of natural toxins can be quite unpredictable. Proceed use with caution. My new trend is to toss the henna, and stick with Aveda Clove Conditioner.

THE COLOR ORANGE [something noteworthy] A fitness blog I follow likened juice to candy bars, warning to limit your intake of the caloric-liquidy-goodness. So, with moderation I will drink juice and eat candy bars…but my philosophy is “everything in moderation…including moderation”.

CAPES [something empowering] Whether we are picked to win or lose, TheDawgDude always makes me feel like the Huskies have a shot…not to mention that the [sometimes inappropriate] humor also makes me feel at home. Go Dawgs! Beat Cal!

COFFEE [latest trend or addiction] Cousin to the well-known Sonic Care, Clarisonic makes my face glow and feel so so good.

THE COLOR ORANGE [something noteworthy] Some people play ordinary Scrabble. 860 and I play 9-tile. Yea, we’re a big deal.
