Cheese. Cheese. And more cheese!

Written by , Posted in recipe

CAPES [something empowering] If you’re going to talk about someone behind their back, make sure they are not sitting directly beside you at your local watering hole.  This happened to me last night.  I’m glad I didn’t say anything I wouldn’t have…but it’s a good reminder nonetheless.

COFFEE [latest trend or addiction] The recipe for Beecher’s “World’s Best” Mac & Cheese pretty much has one ingredient: cheese.  The noodles are thrown in there so you aren’t just eating straight cheese sauce (which I’ve done and it’s delicious).

THE COLOR ORANGE [something noteworthy] Did you know that more guacamole gets consumed on Super Bowl Sunday than any other day out of the year?  Not even Cinco De Mayo tops it!

communal hope

Written by , Posted in recipe, shopping

CAPES [something empowering] When you don’t have the strength or desire to hope, it’s okay let others hope for you. Putting your trust in communal hope gets you through until you have the strength to hope again.

COFFEE [latest trend or addiction] This week, I made Beecher’s “World’s Best” Mac & Cheese using their own recipe. Congratulations Beecher’s, you certainly have earned that title as well as made it to my personal addiction list.

THE COLOR ORANGE [something noteworthy] The website 20×200 is a fabulous resource to help you redecorate or incorporate art into your home! Limited edition prints start at $24, and each week new prints are added to the site. Yesterday, I purchased this artsy map of Amsterdam.

brussels sprouts: the ultimate hipster vegetable

Written by , Posted in health and beauty, recipe

CAPES [something empowering] “Therefore, it behooves us to be careful what we worship, for what we are worshipping we are becoming” (Ralph Waldo Emerson).

COFFEE [latest trend or addiction] Need some extra shine? Try dabbing a bit of lip gloss on your cheeks.

THE COLOR ORANGE [something noteworthy] Here’s my sister-in-law’s delicious recipe for brussels sprouts: 1) halve the sprouts, 2) toss them in olive oil, salt, and pepper, 3) place them cut side down in an iron skillet pan* and toast them, 4) after they are nice and toasty, mix them around in the pan. Finish with a sprinkle of parmesan. A once socially-hated vegetable is now hipster-cool.

*I don’t have an iron skillet, so I broil them in the oven.

Gratitude: go back for seconds and thirds.

Written by , Posted in recipe

CAPES [something empowering] There’s always room on your plate for more spoonfuls of gratitude. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

COFFEE [latest trend or addiction] Make a list of what you’re thankful for, and then add to it things that people have done for you that you’re thankful for. As you watch the list grow and grow, and you’ll find yourself truly grateful and truly satisfied.

THE COLOR ORANGE [something noteworthy] Speaking of being satisfied…I’m very thankful for the Honey-Caramel Apricot Tart topped with crème fraîche whipped cream. This year marks its fourth appearance at the VP Family Thanksgiving.

All rise…

Written by , Posted in beer, football, love, recipe

CAPES [something empowering] Power tends to cause suffering. Love absorbs it (Phillip Yancey).

COFFEE [latest trend or addiction] Forget the yeast, adding a bottle of your favorite beer in its place not only causes bread to rise, but makes it quite flavorful as well.

THE COLOR ORANGE [something noteworthy] All Black Everything! UW plays Arizona in a “lights-out” night game tomorrow night, wearing black from helmet to cleats. It will be hard to find me in the stands of all the fans in black, but I’ll be standing next to two good looking people in red (just don’t judge them for the colors they wear).

Pie, pie…I like pie.

Written by , Posted in recipe, relationships

CAPES [something empowering] To wish that someone was just like you is the worst compliment that you can give them.

COFFEE [latest trend or addiction] Broomstick pies: take an old broomstick, cover the end of it with pilsbury dough, cook over a campfire, and fill with butter and honey. They’re so good, you’ll want to move out to the woods permanently just so you can use it as an excuse to eat them on a regular basis.

THE COLOR ORANGE [something noteworthy] Graduate school: year 2 of 3 is days from being completed. But who’s counting?

What’s on your dollar menu?

Written by , Posted in music, recipe, relationships, trader joes, travel

CAPES [something empowering] It’s important to know your history because sometimes history can repeat itself. But, don’t get hung up on the past because the most important history is the history you make today.

COFFEE [latest trend or addiction] Want a 99-cent meal? Trader Joe’s rice noodle soup + a handful of edamame + squirt of sriracha + teaspoon of hoisin sauce + a few basil leaves = a homemade cup of pho. Yum yum yum.

THE COLOR ORANGE [something noteworthy] Girl Talk is playing the Tuesday night of finals week. I have a final to take the day of and two to turn in the next morning before I board a plane for Kenya. Worth it? Yes. A hundred times, yes.

Maybe your happy ending is moving on.

Written by , Posted in football, recipe, relationships

The following blog is dedicated to CJG, a dear friend, who in her decision to hold on to hope has inspired me to do the same.

CAPES [something empowering] “Maybe your happy ending is moving on…” – happy endings don’t have to be magical, but they always have a foundation of hope.

COFFEE [latest trend or addiction] Homemade tomato soup – canned fire-roasted tomatoes (pureed in blender), chopped onion, a dollop of milk, white pepper and red pepper flakes AND only 10 minutes to make: can’t beat that.

THE COLOR ORANGE [something noteworthy] In case you missed it this year, and in case you missed it last year. Bow down.

out with the old.

Written by , Posted in music, recipe, relationships

CAPES [something empowering] I refer to “the old annie” often. Sometimes in conversation, but mostly to myself saying: “the old annie would have done this, but the new annie isn’t going to do that.” I believe in re-inventing myself with the start of each day. All my yesterdays are filled with the old annies, all my todays are filled with the new annie’s that will tomorrow be the old annie’s. Learn from your mistakes and start afresh each day with the new you that’s learned from the yesterdays of the old you.

COFFEE [latest trend or addiction] Lately, I’ve been making a lot of thai curry. It’s not complicated. If you’ve got corriander, cumin, coconut cream, red curry paste, sugar, basil, peanuts, fish sauce and some kind of meat, you’re good to go. If you want the recipe, I can give it to you. Super easy, super fast, super delicious.

THE COLOR ORANGE [something noteworthy] I listen to a John Mayer Pandora Radio station while I’m at work, only because it plays more Dave than it does John. Does anyone else find that odd?

hmmm, brownies.

Written by , Posted in recipe

CAPES [something empowering] I’m a fairly grounded person and don’t mind being strong for others when they need a friend. However, there are times when I need someone to be strong for me. And that’s okay, because just like an athlete needs a break from their weekly training…having others hold me up helps me recuperate. Without recuperation, muscles break down…and so does Annie.

COFFEE [latest trend or addiction] Hancock’s is right, they are the best.

THE COLOR ORANGE [something noteworthy] Does anyone else miss the show Alias? I do. I also miss Dolphin Cove, Kids INC, Hangin with Mr. Cooper and A Different World…just to name a few.
